Providing NHS services

Hand & Wrist

Hand and wrist surgery focuses on the bones, joints and cartilage of the lower arm, from the elbow downwards.

We rely on our hands and wrists for everything we do in our lives, at home, at work and socially. When they cause us problems, getting on with everyday life can be difficult. For some conditions, surgery may be the solution. The most common symptoms in the UK that afflict the hand include pins and needles, numbness, bent fingers, lumps and bumps, thumb pain, and wrist pain.

Conditions of the hand that may require surgical treatment include arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, Dupuytren’s contracture, and ganglions.

The hand and wrist surgery team at Manchester Surgical Services specialise in the following procedures:

  • Trigger Finger Release – Trigger finger is a condition where the tendons in the finger cannot easily move, and fingers can become stuck in a curved position, so it looks like it is pulling a trigger. Surgery to correct this condition involves releasing the tendon sheath so that the tendon can move again
  • Carpal Tunnel Decompression – – a surgical procedure to minimise pain, pins and needles, and numbness from carpal tunnel syndrome by making an incision on the roof of the carpal ligament in the palm
  • Dupuytrens Fasciectomy – surgery to treat Dupuytren’s finger contracture by removing thickened connective tissue through an incision, which straightens the finger
  • Ganglion Excision – lumps, including ganglions, are common and can cause pain. When needed, ganglions can be removed from the finger, hand, and wrist
  • Trapeziectomy – This procedure is undertaken to relieve the pain from arthritis of the thumb
  • DeQuervains Release – This procedure is undertaken to release tendons around the wrist which can cause significant wrist pain

As with other Orthopaedic procedures, our Consultants are trained in and practice minimally invasive techniques where appropriate to improve surgery outcomes by minimising infection and reducing recovery time.

Hand surgery may be performed under general or local anaesthetic.
